From Website:  When Dewi is clobbered by a falling rat, the wise-cracking, young Welsh dragon snoops his way into a challenging predicament. Helped by a toad with a passion for chemistry experiments, Dewi discovers a megalomaniac baron breeding mutant corn at an unfriendly castle. To thwart the baron’s sickening plan, Dewi must use his wits, moxie, and firepower in a series of catastrophe-skirting capers.

First Sentence:   “Ouch!”  Something hit Dewi’s snout, bounced off, and flew over the rocks in front of him.

Dewi, a young Welsh red dragon, was hit on his snout with what he hoped would be a meteor.  Dewi wanted to be the first dragon to hold a meteor rock in his claws, but a rock it was not.  The small rat was still alive.  Dewi took the unconscious rat to his friend’s place, but Billy—the know-it-all goat—was lost.  Together, they took the rat to Squiff.  Squiff, a mole with nursing sense, made the little rat a soft bed and some watercress soup.  Soon the rat, called Bomber, awoke spitting out words.  “Doom . . . glooms.”  Castle Gloomsgor is Baron Doom’s home.  Lately, rats have been streaming out of the castle, including Bomber.  Dewi finds the Baron is up to no good.

In the Black Mountains lives a very smart toad.  Mr. Jones had an idea he thought might help Dewi stop Baron Doom.  Baron Doom is trying to modify corn so he can take over the world, one kernel at a time.  Dewi needs to get enough evidence that The Royal Welsh Court will arrest and try Baron Doom.  First, they must get the Complaints Department to pass it on to the Royal Court.  Then the court will send out investigators for further information.  All of this could take so long that Baron Doom could escape.  Dewi and Mr. Jones needed a new plan.

Dewi and the Seeds of Doom is a chapter book for middle graders (age 8 to 12).  It is relatively short at 70 pages.  The story has loads of adventure and humor.  Each chapter ends with a cliffhanger, making turning the page irresistible.  Kids could read this in one sitting.  Dewi easily rectifies the conflicts he encounters, most often quickly.  The main character needs difficult conflicts—challenges—if he is to grow by story’s end.  The non-challenging conflicts, short chapters, and relatively easy language makes me believe Dewi and the Seeds of Doom is best suited for younger aged (age 6 to 8), chapter book readers.

Middle grade kids will like Dewi and the Seeds of Doom, just as I liked the story, but it lacks something—, which is on the tip of my tongue, refusing to be spoken.  I like the humor and the characters, though most need fleshed out more.  As a commentary on the power and greed of a corn company, Dewi and the Seeds of Doom hit the mark.  Adults might see Dewi’s story as a commentary on genetically modified corn and its possible long-term dangers.  Baron Doom reminds me of Monsanto, which reportedly boarders on bullying farmers.  Baron Doom has a contract with specific demands, such as buying corn only from him, and agreeing never to complain to any court in the world.  The difficult Complaints Department Dewi tried to talk to fits in this commentary.

On a child’s level, Dewi and the Seeds of Doom is about a greedy, nasty baron, tying to take over the world, who is thwarted by a brave young red Welsh dragon and a chemistry adept toad.  Dewi has a few wonderful friends, who help him at a moment’s notice.  I like the message of friendship.  I would like to know more about Dewi, and maybe that will happen if this becomes a series.  A red dragon with a heart of gold and a curiosity streak he must explore would be open to many wonderful adventures.

    • I do not know if the author even had thoughts of the corn killing company or not. BUt I could see it and loved it. Dewi is a great little story for kids who like adventure and dinosaurs that have unique personalities. 😆
