Stingray City, is located in a real place actually called Stingray City. Why Stingray City? Because when the boat pulls up near the sandbar of Stingray City the pristine, aqua-blue waters off the coast of Grand Cayman Island, hundreds of stingrays gather around. When I was there, the ocean turned black from all the stingrays waiting for us to swim with and feed. Grand Cayman Island, a mile long island with the most interesting people and places to check out, is the setting for Tristan Hunt and the Sea Guardians #3: Stingray City.

I went to Stingray City a few years back and would absolutely love to return. Yes, I did swim with the rays—and loved every minute of it, even when I jumped in and was swarmed on all sides by the rays of varying sizes. I had a pocket full of squid and they eagerly wanted to relieve me of my stash. I have a terrific picture of me holding a smiling ray, but in moving I cannot find the darn thing. I’ll locate it for the review. Stingray City and Grand Cayman were great fun. I recommend it to everyone who is lucky enough to get to Grand Cayman Island.  But enough about me.

This post is not about my grand time at Grand Cayman and Stingray City. It is about the Tristan Hunt and the Sea Guardians series, a terrific middle grade series that marries real-life settings with fantasy, adding in climate control and ocean conservation. Tristan (who can communicate with sharks and rays), and his best friends, Sam (a girl who can echolocate with whales and dolphins), and Hugh (who can change colors like and can communicate with octopuses) work under the water to help save ocean inhabitants’ lives—this time, the fish and rays around the Cayman Islands (Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands: Cayman Brac and Little Cayman).

Here is the official description of BOOK #3: STINGRAY CITY

“Being a teenager is never easy. Especially when you can talk to sharks! Tristan Hunt has enough to worry about with girl troubles, his parents, and trying to keep his extraordinary abilities a secret. But when Tristan and his friends are called upon to investigate the disappearance of stingrays and other ocean life in the waters off Grand Cayman, the stakes are higher than they’ve ever been before. Can Tristan solve the mystery of the missing stingrays and save them from a horrible fate? Or will he and his friends become the stingray-napper’s next victims? Join Tristan Hunt and the Sea Guardians on their most dangerous adventure yet.”

I have read about half of book 3 and have trouble putting it down when I must. It is the BEST Tristan Hunt yet!

“When the camp learns that ocean animals are in danger, Tristan and his new friends are pulled into a daring rescue in the Bahamas. Dive in with Tristan and the Sea Guardians and discover an underwater adventure that will keep you turning the pages.”

Tristan spends his summer at the Florida Keys Sea Park Summer Camp. He and the other campers all have some unusual ability related to the ocean. Tristan can relate to sharks. He hones this ability during most of the summer camp. A billionaire accused of shark-finning holds three older campers hostage on his ship. The simple rescue mission Tristan and the other new campers become involved in turns out to be a more dangerous mission than originally planned. Tristan and the others may not get back to camp before the billionaire’s goonies harm them. This would not go over well with parents expecting to pick up sons and daughters at camp’s end.

“After thwarting the dastardly plans of J.P. Rickerton, Tristan Hunt is having trouble keeping his newfound talents a secret. And if undercover spies and a mysterious illness threatening to expose the secrets of camp weren’t enough, reports of dying fish and disappearing sponge in the Caribbean call Tristan and his friends back into action. Will the Sea Guardians discover the source of the problem before time runs out? Can they escape the threat of an oncoming storm? Or will a betrayal from one of their own ensure it’s already too late?”

Back at camp for year 2, Tristan and his fellow second-year campers are called on to investigate why fish are dying in the British Virgin Islands.Tristan Hunt and the Sea Guardians series continues to refine the campers’ special ocean skills. Tristan can communicate with sharks and rays. Sam can echolocate with whales and dolphins. All the kids get webbed appendages after drinking the special seawater. Actual Caribbean locations around the B. V. I. become the settings. Prager has obviously been to these islands given the expansive details. Readers will feel the water at their heels as the kids check out all the islands. Along the way, readers will learn some pirate history.

This middle grade series is a great choice for both boys and girls, age 7 and up. Even adults will love Tristan and his friends, as they tirelessly work to save the world’s oceans.

The author, ELLEN PRAGER, holds a PhD, is a marine scientist, and was once the chief scientist at the world’s only undersea research station in the Florida Keys. The camp is somewhat based on this research station. All of Dr. Prager’s credentials, degrees, and experience make her one of, if not the smartest person in ocean science today. Her writing is engaging and interesting.

You can read Ellen Prager’s interesting post titled, Storytelling, Teens, and Science HERE. You can also listen to Ellen Prager read from The Shark Whisperer, while underwater—YES, that’s correct. Underwater, in scuba gear, reading to landlubbers. Check it out HERE.

Check out the Tristan Hunt and the Sea Guardians Series today. You’ll be caught up and ready for Stingray City in no time!
