Review
Carlos is an artist who loves to paint. Carlos will teach little aspiring artists about squares, triangles, circles, dots, and all sorts of lines from straight to squiggly. Art is composed of series of objects. A dog could have a triangle for its body and a square head. A couple of squiggle lines for ears, a couple of white circles for eyes, and a black circle for a nose. Walla! A dog appears on Carlos’ easel pad.

Mondi is a musician. He loves to play his trumpet, but can also play the drums, cymbals, rattles, guitar, and his xylophone. Mondi loves to sing and snap his fingers with the beat. Along with his friends, Mondi plays in a band making joyous music for his fans.

Nina is a dancer. She loves to wear her pink tutu as she makes the most majestic moves. She jumps like a cat and flies like a butterfly. More than that, Nina can float, spin, and trapeze right into her papa’s arms. Nina is a wonderful dancer, letting her spirit lead the way as she moves to the beat in her heart.

Ruby loves clothes. Maybe she is a clothes designer. She loves to dress herself in her own unique style. Accompanied by her pet shoebox dog, Ruby dresses in her red, multi-colored polka dot dress and striped shorts. On her feet are a pair of white striped socks and doggy slippers. Just for fun—and because she needs a hat—Ruby adds a red heart to a green bowl and plops it on her head. Instant hat!

Little Artists Box Set is composed of artist Carlos, musician Mondi, dancer Nina, and clothes designer Ruby. Together, these four characters, and their accompanied book, give little children a set of books for every creative impulse. Young readers will read short one sentence spreads with brightly colored images to help them along their new reading life. The art is bright and cheery, telling each child’s tale in easy to recognize pictures, literally showing each sentence. Children will love the images, mostly of items they have in their toy box or around their home.

The Little Artists board books are a little different from the average board book. For starters, they are not made of the thick cardboard little fingers can easily turn, yet the pages are sturdy and difficult to tear. Young children might have difficulty turning the pages, but none at all in transporting them to their favorite reader for story time. The Little Artist books are smaller than most board books at mere 4-inches square, but a perfect size for little hands. Young children will enjoy each book and will soon learn each character’s name and favorite activity. The set is contained in its own cardboard folder, making it easy to keep the books together.
