#920–921 – A Young Billie B. Brown by Sally Rippin and Alisa Coburn

Billie B. Brown has lived a literary life in chapter books. Now she returns—younger than before—to entertain young children with her newest adventures set in picture book format. I’m guessing Billie will use the picture book series to slowly grow-up to her original chapter book age. If  you loved Billie B. Brown as a youngster, you’ll love her as a toddler in these two new adventures.

“When Billie B. Brown gets to preschool, every day becomes a super-duper adventure . . .

“Billie is off on an underwater adventure! Will she be able to save her friends from the great gloopy sea monster?” AND THEN “Billie is off on a great desert adventure! Will her magic carpet help her escape the forty furious thieves?” [back cover]

Billie’s Underwater Adventure
Billie B. Brown does not want to go to school today. She STOMPS into the classroom. Immediately, something catches Billie’s eye. Water! Miss Amy hands out sea creatures costumes: a mermaid, an octopus, and a green shiny sea creature. Though Billie wanted to be the mermaid, the glittery green material she now wears soothes her. The three kids jump into the ocean and begin swimming. A castle is not far off. Billie leads her new friends over a coral reef ad a school of fish. Once they reach the castle, the kids sit down to a feast, until . . . “A great gloopy sea monster sticks its big gooby head in.” He is hungry and now he is mad. How will the kids escape unharmed?

underwaterspreadUsing a blue blanket for the sea, lifting it up for the kids to enter the ocean and swim is creative and a good way to facilitate a young child’s imagination. Under the blanket of the sea, Billie, Jack, and Zora have an amazing adventure, including narrowly escaping from a hungry and angry gloppy sea monster. This imaginative tale is what preschool and kindergarten are about: creativity, imagination, and fun while learning social skills. Billie’s Underwater Adventure will inspire young children and encourage them to have their own adventures.

Billie’s Great Desert Adventure
Young Billie B. Brown happily “skips” into preschool wearing “puddle-stomping duck boots.” Today is a good day to stomp in some puddles. Miss Amy says rainy days are perfect for reading. Sulking, Billie “flops” into the reading corner cushions, hiding. Jack lifts the cushion and realizes an amazing thing: Billie is in a cave. Billie and Jack explore the cave. Billie spies something up ahead, but then . . . a deep voice rings out, a huge stone moves, and 40 thieves enter the cave. How will Billie and Jack get back to school in time for snack?

desertspreadBillie once again shows her stubborn, confident personality as she sulks and then as she frees herself and Jack from the clutches of 40 Arabian thieves, including Ali Baba. Billie cannot keep up her sulking after Jack finds her in a cave. The excitement of what they could find pushes Billie forward, forgetting all about stomping in puddles. The illustrations are simple but effective. Young children will love them and Billie. Imagination and creativity are important in the Billie Super-Duper Adventures. Billie’s imagination takes her places most never think of going. Whether it is in an ocean castle or a cave, Billie is ready to add to the story and save her friends.

This new Billie B. Brown series, for young children, not only introduce children to an iconic chapter book character, they will stoke youngsters’ imaginations and creativity. If Billie can swim the ocean blue, so can I. If Billie can explore a cave, find a glittering treasure, and make it back in time for snack, so can I. Rainy days are as much fun as sunny days when your imagination is in charge. Young children learn to see the world through creative eyes. After reading a Billie’s Super-Duper Adventure story young children will be inspired to find and explore other worlds existing in their imaginations.
