“All of aviation’s dangerous, exciting, and most courageous moments are featured within this stunning compendium on flight. Packed with stories of heroic and innovative pioneers, fascinating profiles of remarkable planes from Spitfires to space shuttles, all accompanied by sensational photographs, illustrations, and diagrams. Cleared for Takeoff promises to astonish, entertain, and fire the imaginations of everyone with t heir head in the clouds.

“Fascinating flight facts and fun include:

• Air Crafts: Make an Origami Helicopter and Water Bottle Rocket
• Flight in film from Airplane! to Top Gun
• Chicken or Beef? A History of Airline Food
• How to Park an Airliner: A Guide to Runway Code” [INSIDE JACKET]

Cleared for Takeoff is a huge book on the history of airplanes and air traffic from private, commercial, military, and speculative points of view, including how each helped shape world events. Rather than a division of topics by chapters, the contents page lists 110 article titles. Most of these articles fill a double-page spread, though a few pieces are longer. Illustrations, photographs, graphics, and pictures of airplanes dominate the pages of this most interesting compendium on air flight.
cleared-for-takeoff_int-3Kids interested in flying planes, piloting a military plane, or even shooting off in a rocket ship will find interesting articles in Cleared for Takeoff. The pictures alone make this a stunning book. I’ve never been an aviation “geek,” yet found myself glued to the pages. It is so easy to flip through the book to an unexpected topic and find yourself engrossed in the subject.

Using an old CD, a bottle nozzle, and a balloon, kids can learn how a hovercraft works by building a simple model. If you have ever wondered how planes, especially jets, land on aircraft carriers, you can find the answer in Cleared for Takeoff. From the early beginnings of planes to the broader categories of military uses, Cleared for Takeoff will keep enthusiasts buried between its pages.
cleared-for-takeoff_int-1There is so much included in this compendium of air flight that the lack of an index was surprising and a glaring mistake. There is no rhyme or reason to the order of the articles, so kids looking for something or someone in particular will be scanning and checking articles for much too long, and still not find what they need. Even by simply grouping articles into topics would have made finding things much easier. Without at minimum an index, Cleared for Takeoff becomes difficult to use as a reference for school.
cleared-for-takeoff_int-2Cleared for Takeoff, read from cover to cover or randomly skipped around, is extremely interesting. Kids who love airplanes, the military, or the history of aviation will enjoy Cleared for Takeoff. To its credit, the article titles and subtitles are clear in what you will find in each article. There are so many obscure things included, such as the use of skipping stones to figure out how planes will drop bombs, and eerie subjects like the Bermuda Triangle and aliens to keep readers engrossed. Kids and adults will like this article driven book on aviation and everything possibly connected to planes and flight of every kind.

Cleared for Takeoff makes a great gift.
