Winter. Snowy woods and sleeping animals . . . all but one. Little Bear cannot sleep. While his family hibernates, Little Bear—pillow in hand—goes for a walk, hoping to find a friend, but everyone in the forest is asleep. He keeps walking through the woods until he come to the city. There he falls in line with a parade, explores the zoo in Central Park, visits the Statue of Liberty, and then a couple of well-known museums. When Little Bear finally tires, finding a place to sleep in the city that never sleeps is nearly impossible. A bus stop—with an ad for Bear Mountain—seems perfect . . . until people crowd onto the bench. He tries to sleep atop a huge toy bear, but being in the store window made him visible to everyone.
The Bear Who Couldn’t Sleep is a beautifully illustrated story, mostly in shades of blue, including Little Bear’s sleep-wear. The brightest, most colorful spread is that of the parade, which Little Bear slips in with the clowns. He enjoys all his daylight activities, but as the sun starts to set, so does Little Bear. Finding a place to sleep in the city that never sleeps is difficult. Even sleeping in the park is interrupted by a park ranger who makes Little Bear move on. If he can’t rest n the park, his only choice is to find his family’s home in the woods. Little Bear’s return is as silent as his leaving so he slips in next his mother.
Young children will love the story of the lost little bear and his adventures in the big city. Observant readers will notice Little Bear has a friend throughout his adventure. Other details help make The Bear Who Couldn’t Sleep interesting and fun. Finding his way home, may remind youngsters of a time they were lost, helping them to empathize with the small bear. Those who like Benjamin Chaud’s The Bear Song series will love The Bear Who Couldn’t Sleep.
