BARNYARD JAMBOREE!

Cat plays her banjo but her band is missing. Cat wants a jam session and finds Pig to join her. Who else can they find? Turn the page and you’ll see Cat and Pig found Sheep on their way to the barnyard. The music gets better as they walk. Horse, wearing dancing shoes, adds the drums. One more to find who could it be?

SWIMMING HOLE PARTY!

Monkey wants to swim today, but wants to invite someone to go with him. He sees Hippo and tells him to hurry, “It’s time for a swim party.” Turn the page and Lion is there. Will he join Monkey and Hippo? Who else will join them at the swimming hole? You? Make sure to take the best earplugs for one’s need! Water does not feel good in your ear.

Barnyard Jamboree has a kitten tagging along with cat as she looks for her barnyard bandmates. Cat finds Pig, Sheep, Horse, and Cow. Each bandmate wears a hat and a bandana, but only Horse wears a cowboy hat. As young children turn the pages, they find a new animal and their instrument. The entire band is playing on the last spread where a surprise awaits. Young children can move three of the instruments to another animal, including non-band member kitten.
Swimming Hole Party begins with Monkey wearing a floatation ring about his waist. Monkey is looking for friends to invite swimming. Monkey first finds Hippo, then Lion, Giraffe, and Elephant. Each of these wild animal brings a water toy. Again, a surprise awaits young children on the final spread. In Swimming Hole Party, children can play with any of the three water toys (beach ball, sail ship, and yellow rubber ducky). Accompanying the group is a green parrot, who could be the narrator.
The Animal Friends brings two joyful books for young children. Terada gives children an interesting shape for these books. On the cover, you can instantly see which animals are in the story and the order they will join in the activity. The pages—thicker and sturdier for little hands—start small and become taller with each page turn. Each smiling, brightly colored animal wears a different color-banded hat and a matching bandana.

Young children will like these animals, who are sans technology. All are outdoors enjoying the weather, making friends, and having fun. The two books make you want to pick up an instrument and play in the band or don a suit and swim with the wild animals. Young children can easily make up their own stories, as they “read” the Animal Friends without adult help.
