“IT’S AN
UNFORGETTABLE
FIELD TRIP!
“There is more to this museum than meets the eye! Notoriously (and delightfully), unreliable narrator Henry is late to a museum where his class is spending the day. But he has a plan: He’ll just catch up in one of the exhibits. That’s not possible in these halls!
“With volcanoes erupting, dinosaurs charging, and secret stairwells lurking, reuniting with his classmates becomes a quest of outrageous proportions. Young readers will revel in this entertaining book’s over-the-top antics.” [PRESS RELEASE]

For a fourth time, Henry stands before his teacher trying to explain what happened. First, Henry didn’t do his homework¹, and then he was late to school². The last time we were with the young boy, Henry had a tall tale regarding his summer vacation when he went camping with a tent from Survival Cooking.³. Today, Henry missed the bus headed for the museum. He and his faithful dog arrived, but not on time. Henry still needed to catch up with the class. He thought he had a plan, but like most of Henry’s plans, this one went a little . . . okay, it went a lot, overboard.
Kids will love A Funny Thing Happened at the Museum . . . for the crazy antics and the way Henry makes the museum his own. Humor is on high alert as Henry and his dog travel from exhibit to exhibit, often turning each exhibit into something hysterically Henry. Running from a charging triceratops—so Henry claims—the pair end up in an exhibit of Neanderthals, who they entertained with balloon animals. If you like detail, as I do, you will love A Funny Thing Happened at the Museum . . . With the Neanderthals, check out the dog blowing up a balloon. With such attention to detail, it is easy to see why kids love Davide Cali and Benjamin Chaud’s books.
In other exhibits, the dog flicks the switch to the exploding volcano, sending Henry into the air on a bed of lava. Soon the pair needed a rest. What better place to rest than inside a showcase, stacked up like a teepee pole. Hogwarts’s staircases are nothing compared to this museum’s stairwell. If not for a secret, uh, never mind; let’s just say the two got away from the crazy staircases.
I did notice something I overlooked in the opast three edtions. Like those three, this fourth book contains the same teacher—nothing surprising there—and she wears the same exact outfit on the first spread of each book—that is odd. Is it by design? I’m guessing yes. I doubt the dynamic duo of Cali-Chaud would leave anything to chance.
Readers who enjoyed the three previous editions of Henry’s misadventures will like this fourth museum based romp. Henry’s journey through the museum takes him to many exhibits, none of which are the same afterwards.
