Why I like this book
~Little Hippo is largely the cutest small hippo I have ever seen.
~The entire Hippo family is terrific, especially their eye’s, which can me great expression is just the movement of their pupils.
~The ink and watercolor illustrations are not cartoonish, but give young children a fair representation of the wild world and the animals in it.
~The test is simple, easy to follow, and easy to remember, allowing young children to recall and read by themselves after just a few times listening attentively to the story.
~Being able to take the book and read it by themselves empowers children and enhances their love of reading.
~Little Hippo learns that size is relative. Showing this to children may help a child wishing to be bigger, or older, so they can learn to accept themselves.
~Children can learn that anyone can be a help to another.
~I love the overall goodness of the story and the wonderful illustrations. Little Hippo really doesn’t change from spread to spread. A slight head movement or eye change is all it takes to give the little hippo personality that pops.

Yes, the illustrations are gorgeous. I find it amazing how the same pose (or very near to it) can be used for many spreads, yet with a change in eye focus Little Hippo looks totally different. That’s talent.

It can be tough deciding which picture book to offer for PPBF, but not this little guy. Sometimes you just get the “feeling” it will be a good book to pass on.

You are so right. The bright green makes you focus onto the grey hippos. Noticed this but didn’t give it any thought. Thanks Patricia!

The first book I’d ever read by Valeri, I read too fast and missed all the subtleties. Now I devour his work. This one looks great. Thanks.

I suppose it always would depend on what books your local library is buying. Mine does a fine job with PBs and it has been said, I am their best ‘customer’!

I like Valeri Gorbachev’s repetitive style when Little Hippo cries, “I’m big now!” throughout the story. Young children could read this -giving them confidence when beginning to read.
