“This book was conceived of, written by, illustrated by, and created by 30 art teachers from all over the world who share a passion for art history and teaching. Each teacher has emulated an artist of his/her choosing, and included a Christmas tree in a way that honors the work of that artist. Some took on more than one artist to bring you a total of 44 works of art. From the Renaissance to the modern genres, these art teachers, elementary to high school, created these delightful illustrations to share with you.” [back cover]

Review
If Picasso Had a Christmas Tree, began as an interesting idea: get together art teachers from around the world to produce an art history book appealing to children. What is more appealing than Christmas and the iconic Christmas tree? Twenty-nine art teachers, including the author, each painted a Christmas tree (or a few) in the style of a selected artist from as far back as the Renaissance.

First, let me caution. I am not an art reviewer, collector, or connoisseur. Like everyone, I know what I like, but often cannot explain why. If a piece makes me linger, or stare a little longer, or gets me thinking I either love it or hate it. Same expressions for both, which is the thing about art:  It can provoke such strong emotions. One person can love a piece, while another person will not.

If Picasso Had a Christmas Tree excited me from the query. All of these teachers collaborating to produce an art history book for children disguised as Christmas book. Brilliant idea. If Picasso Had a Christmas Tree is nothing less than a visual feast for the eyes. Emulating Edvard Munch, Daryn Pake Martin’s piece is the only one with Santa. I love the swirl of colorful air above a lake of blue. The tree’s curving and reaching toward the group of reindeer is visually striking. It is one of my favorites.

When asked to review a book for ages 7 to 18, or some other huge age range, I shudder. Yet, If Picasso Had a Christmas Tree, and a companion book, If Picasso Went to the Zoo, actually works for this diverse group of kids. The art is diverse and appropriate for any classroom, elementary or secondary. The art teachers involved range from the same K to 12 range. In addition to the book, there are lesson plans available, free for teachers to use with their art lessons.

For each Christmas tree, Gibbons wrote a poem about the selected artist, starting each poem with these two lines (changing “Picasso” to the selected artist’s name):

“If Picasso had a Christmas tree,
are these the colors and shapes you’d see?”

It was difficult to keep the meter correct with “Picasso” changing to a different name on each successive spread.  Some names are long, some short, and all variously stressed making consistent meter a difficult, if not impossible task. But the most difficult reading comes from attempting to follow the author’s introductory note:

“. . . they are meant to be read in a cadence similar to T’was the night before Christmas.” (sic)

As hard as I tried, I could not read in the suggested cadence. For me, not even the first two lines follow the rhythm of that iconic poem. The text would be much better if written in prose. The information would be easier for children to comprehend. The use of slanted rhymes did not help.

Where If Picasso Had a Christmas Tree shines is in the art. The art teachers collaborated to make a stuning art book that will please children ages 7 to 107. (Why not those age 108 and older? No idea.) Forty-four different artistic styles combine to make one glorious Christmas paperback. If this was printed in large hardback, the outcome would be a beautiful Christmas table book. If Picasso Had a Christmas Tree is also a fantastic art appreciation book. I did not choose which pieces to show, but think these four pieces nicely represent the art in If Picasso Had a Christmas Tree.

If Picasso Had a Christmas Tree was a massive project, masterminded by Gibbons and published by Gibbons. Whether you like art for the sake of art, interested in teaching art to kids, or want to encourage projects like this one, you’ll enjoy the work of these art teachers and their variously styled Christmas trees. There are so many beautiful Christmas Trees, many of which may still be for sale.*

Edgar is dreadfully nervous.. The rambunctious raven knocked over his mother’s prized stone sculpture. But even the influence of his sister, Lenore, threatening to tattle can’t keep Edgar from trying to hide his misdeed.”

Review

Mom leaves her two little ravens alone for a short while with paper and crayons to occupy them. Little boys being little boys, Edgar—inspired by The Raven— decides to make paper airplanes and throws them at Lenore. Lenore hides. Edgar runs after her with another plane, knocks into a table, and accidentally breaking a statue.

“Look what you did! I’m telling mom when she gets home.”

Sisters can be such difficult creatures. Edgar, hoping mom won’t notice, tries to hide the broken piece. A little mouse suggests under a floorboard and then in a drawer. Finally, while hearing Lenore repeat her I’m-going-to-tell mantra, Edgar and the mouse try to fix the statue—as its eyes look fearfully at the mouse’s offering of tape.

gss pdf 1The illustrations, are black and white with red highlights and light purple backgrounds. This gives the feeling one is peaking in on the raven’s home as the scenes unfold. The story, based on Edgar Allen Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart, uses a statue—head bust—of Poe, who watches over the children, his eyes darting here and there, providing additional humor for those that notice. The illustrations are very good, though near the end, when the ravens speak their mouths no longer open as they do earlier. Certainly only a small detail and one children may not notice.

When mom returns, Lenore is ready to tell on Edgar, who, with the helpful mouse, has been pacing ever since “fixing” the statue of Poe. Mom stops Lenore short, admonishing her not to tattle. She asks Edgar,

“Edgar, do you have something to tell me?”

gs pdf 2

Edgar tearfully apologizes. Mom reminds the young raven how much she loves him; a sweet ending to a typical brother-sister afternoon. Children will laugh at the two ravens, while parents will immediately recognize the tattle-tell from their own lives or that of their children. Edgar and the Tattle-Tale Heart is a beautifully illustrated story told succinctly in dialogue. It should be another hit in Gibbs Smith’s line of literary-based BabyLit® children’s books. (BabyLit® First Step book)

#743-45 – Charley Harper’s Animal Alphabet AND Count the Birds AND Book of Colors by Zoe Burke & Charley Harper

Today is not December 8th, but that is the date of Charley Harper Day in Cincinnati, Ohio where Mr. Harper (1922-2007), a notable wildlife artist, attended art school at The Art Academy of Cincinnati. Pomegranate Kids still publishes Charley Harper wildlife, notably in children’s books,

Harper once said, “I regard the picture as an ecosystem in which all elements are interrelated, interdependent, perfectly balanced . . . the picture is one small rectangle in which the artist can create an ordered universe [out of chaos].

Mr. Harper used basic shapes to create animals, saying he, “winnowed out all but the most important details.” The following three board books from Zoe Burke and Pomegranate Kids proudly introduces children to the wildlife of Charley Harper.

In Charley Harper’s Animal Alphabet, circles, triangles, squares, and lines become a beaver, cardinal, dove, elephant, and more as you continue through the alphabet. Kids will easily recognize each animal and most will understand the basic shapes that comprise those animals. This ABC book is fun for young kids learning their alphabet and for adults who love art, especially minimalistic art.

Charley Harper was an artist for more than sixty years, working with his fellow-artist and wife Edie McKee.
Together they traveled the US before settling down at Harper Studio, their joint studio in Cincinnati. Harper once said when watching wildlife, “I don’t see the feathers in the wings, I just count the wings. I see exciting shapes, color combinations, patterns, textures, fascinating behavior, and endless possibilities for making interesting pictures.”

Charley Harper’s Count the Birds highlights some of those birds he watched. While made with simple shapes, the animals have intricate detail work filling the simple patterns. This detail makes each animal unique, humorous, and always a delight for the eye. The 6 Pelicans have long pointed beaks filled with lines of various thickness, beginning at and extending from mid-pupil. The connected pelicans look like banjos as they draw your eye from top to bottom. The 8 heart-shaped owls sit inside a heart surrounded by slivers of orange moon. Counting with Charley Harper reminds me of the BabyLit® board books from publisher Gibbs Smith (see examples HERE and HERE).

Charley Harper’s Book of Colors completes the trio of board books young children will love for more than what they can learn. This book will inspire a love of art, just as the Gibbs Smith BabyLit® board books inspired a love of the classics. The red and black ladybug, in a field of green dots, or the orange spotted cat, laying on a tree limb, will catch the imagination of children and adults alike. Young children will learn more than the basic colors in this sturdy board book. Besides red, blue, yellow, green, orange, and brown, there is black, gray, pink, and white.

Zoe Burke’s perfectly rhyming text wonderfully complements Charley Harper’s artwork. Parents will enjoy reading these board books to their children. The books are sturdy and the right size for little hands. The bright colors and original designs will catch young children’s attention. I’ve seen a lot of board books over the years and truly believe these Charley Harper/Zoe Burke board books are destined to become classics.

#602 – The Big Book of Superheroes by Bart King & Greg Paprocki

“Supervillains started quaking in their boots when they heard Bart King was creating a foolproof handbook that would teach superheroes how to interview and hire sidekicks, customize secret lairs—oh, and how to perfect hand-to-hand and foot-to-butt combat techniques! So, if you have a burning desire to fight evildoers, and a bit of allowance money to purchase this book, grab your battle costume disguise and join the fight for good!”

Opening

“Welcome to the world of superheroes! I have good news. By reading these words, you just became an honorary superhero. Yay!”

So You Want to be a Superhero (aka About the Book)

It begins at the beginning:  you’ve made your decision to become a superhero, fighter of evil, doer of good. Now you need to learn how to act and look like a superhero, starting with your superpower. What will it be? King gives you the 15 most popular superpowers, though there are many, many more to choose from. Then you must act like a superhero. This section gives you situations and asks you to pick the superhero answer. Many answers are further impressed upon your mind through the use of black and white illustrations.

Ways to become a superhero, short of reading the entire The Big Book of Superheroes, includes becoming an orphan, taking your vitamins, and having a rotten childhood. Those are but a few of the ways to shortcut your way to becoming a superhero. Personally, I like “Be a Handsome, Genius Millionaire,” but being hit by cosmic rays works, too. Once you tell your parents you are a superhero, the real training begins.

crayon melt evil laugh

Know when to fight—and with which weapon—and know when to run, I mean retreat. What does a superhero say? The section called “Zingers and Battle Cries—Speaking Superhero!” will help you find a battle cry, a motto, and how to super trash talk. With super training complete, who will be your toughest foe? Rugrats! That’s right, little kids, some of whom may have their own version of a superpower. You can’t just hold these rugrats at arm’s length and laugh. No, you need to know how to control supertantrums.

You need a supername. One suggestion is to find a cool word and spell it backwards, such as El Carim (miracle) or Repus (super). Repus would be a good name for a feline superhero. Add a “p” and get the name Repups, the perfect name for Repus’s canine sidekick. Yep, animals can be superheroes. Your dog or cat might be on a super mission right now. You also need a costume. Maybe a cape would be good with a utility belt to hold your utilities. The Fantastic 4 have great costumes according to King. The Human Torch had flaming underwear, hopefully not as he wore them.

dog hero

Superheroes need to know the difference between right and wrong. They need ethics. Can you learn this? Check out the quiz to see where you stand. If you have a secret identity, keep it a secret along with any super powers you may have. Secrecy is very important to a superhero. On the wrong side are supervillains and ethically challenged people. It’s best to keep an eye out for some of the worst. Those would be the jokers, mad scientists, and high school students (the most abundant).

Review

If you want to be a superhero, start with The Big Book of Superheroes. This book is more like a handbook for good rather than a literary book anyone can find in a bookstore (but you can). This book is the superhero’s bible. Everything you would ever need to know to become a superhero is in The Big Book of Superheroes. I like The Big Book of Superheroes. I had never thought of becoming a superhero, but after reading this book/handbook, it is hard not to want to join up forces with the likes of Batman, Superman, and Super Tot. There is a lot of common sense within the pages of The Big Book of Superheroes, such as,

“The more you know, the less you don’t.”

Who can argue with that? One of the best sections is the “Superpower Activity.” These boxed areas contain activities kids can immediately do, including a list of everything they will need. Kids can add to their super costume by making super goggles, utility belts, and power bands. There is even a sneaky way for superheroes to calm a rugrat using a balloon and one command. Kids will have loads of fun with these silly activities. The pop quizzes are not as abundant as the activities, but they are just as much fun for the superhero know-it-all . . . or do they? All answers are included.

superhero kid and parent

The black and white cartoonish illustrations show kids acting out some portion of the text. They are just what I would expect to see in a book about superheroes. The illustrations help break up the text, add humor, and sometimes help clarify the text. King writes The Big Book of Superheroes using text, lists, asides, blue boxes of comic facts, activities, pop quizzes, and comic illustrations, which all keep the book hopping and kids interested. King’s lists, found in every chapter, include things such as,

The 10 Most Underrated Superpowers,

The 10 Lamest Superpowers,

The Top 6 Tips for Parents of a Superhero.

He adds hunks of factual material, such as Superman’s original slogan, and fun comic book facts to teach kids. With Superman’s slogan, King tries to teach kids to come up with their own slogan, motto, or catch phrase. If kids love comics, superheroes, or villains they will love these easy to find snippets by King. These sections are in blue text, making them stand out from the page.

The Big Book of Superheroes, nicely bound in hardcover with bright white pages, is a substantial book filled with enough superhero information to keep a middle grader’s nose between the pages for quite some time. It is the perfect book for kids who love superheroes. Boys may seem the logical choice for The Big Book of Superheroes but girls will like this too. King includes many tidbits and facts about different comic book heroes that I found fascinating. In regards to becoming a superhero by using this book, King wrote,

“Sure, you could read this entire book. But who has that kind of time?”

The same can be said of the book as a whole. No time to read the entire book, pick out the section you want and return later for the others. Readers will not lose any continuity or meaning by skipping around. If more interested in the supervillain, jump towards the back. Interested in superpowers, head toward the middle. Back and forth can become practical. The one thing that bothered me throughout the book is King’s continued insistence on placing the word “super” before other words, making a new word. Some of King’s new “words” include superbreathe, superspeed, superhealing, superhearing, superintelligence, and supergoggles. These words are not supersmart.

superanimal heroes

Kids and adults who like supervillains, DC comics, and superheroes like Batman, the Fantastic 4, and one of my favorites, Wonder Dog, will enjoy The Big Book of Superheroes. It will keep readers entertained for hours. Reluctant readers will find The Big Book of Superheroes a great choice for summer reading. The Big Book of Superheroes can help readers become the hero they would like to become, while learning new facts about favorite superheroes or previously unknown superheroes. The appendix and bibliography are great places to continue learning about superheroes. The large book is entertaining on every page. Super-Kids will love The Big Book of Superheroes, the newest Big book by Bart King.

#235-236 – Baby Lit® A Christmas Carol & Dracula by Jennifer Adams and Alison Oliver

Today we have two books from the Little Masters, Baby Lit® Books collection from publisher Gibbs Smith, author Jennifer Adams, and illustrator Alison Oliver.  The first, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, is a coloring primer that will paint this week’s big day red and green. Then Bram Stoker’s Dracula, a counting primer, will put a little bit of scare into those post-holiday bills.

A Christmas Carol, a color primer

A Christmas Carol, color primer has the characters and objects one most connects with this Dickens classic. Christmas past, present, and future are represented by gold, green, and purple respectively. And it would not be A Christmas Carol without ghostly

old Mr. Marley clanging around in his chains. The characters that are recognizably from this Dickens story are represented.

baby lit christmas carolI like the colors which are not bright primary colors, like most books for this age group. The colors are more adult, toned down, and a bit darker on some pages, more in line with Scrooge’s attitude. It then lightens up.  I love Father Christmas in his green robe on an ivory background coupled with the words “Green Wreath.” Just like e the original classic by Charles Dickens, this Baby Lit® version is a Christmas classic for your baby that can be handed down with pride.

Dracula, a counting primer

Dracula, a counting primer is based on the Bram Stoker classic. The first color that comes to mind when thinking of vampires is dark purple and that is the color of the cover.  The book pages are black, gray, whites and red; all very ghoulish and appropriate. The counting is from “1 castle” to “12 garlic flowers” with “5 heroes” and “6 tombstones.”

This is, for want of a better word, a cool little book. The illustrations are fantastic as is the text. But, I must admit, when I compositedracularead the title “Dracula, a counting primer,” my mind went into Count Dracula mode. “One vampire, two vampires, three vampires,, ha ha, hee, hee.”  With all due respect to Sesame Street, this conting Dracula is classier and more kid-friendly. And best of all, no television is required. The start of a life reading begins with this and other Baby Lit® books.

When the very first Baby Lit® books were reviewed here I thought were fantastic introductions not only to the classics, but to reading itself.  I thought the books were adorable and would be the perfect touch in any nursery. Those thoughts have not changed with A Christmas Carol and Dracula.

#109-110 – Baby Lit Books: Alice in Wonderland & Jane Eyre by Jennifer Adams

A to Z Challenge Day 2: B

.Baby Lit™ Books take the perennial popularity of classic writers like Charlotte Brontë and Lewis Carroll, in a

fashionable way to introduce your toddler to the world of classic literature. With clever, simple text by Jennifer Adams, paired with stylish design and illustrations by Sugar’s Alison Oliver, Little Miss Brontë and Little Master Carroll are a must for every savvy parent’s nursery library.

Alice in Wonderland: A Baby Lit Colors Primer

Jane Eyre: A Baby Lit Counting Primer

These are the newest additions in the Baby Lit Series by author Jennifer Adams and illustrator Alison Oliver.  Together they are writing what is sure to be the next board book classic for the youngest set. Each book is a 22 page unique primer for counting or for color.  The pages are made of thick cardboard and just right for little hands to turn the on their own.  Moms will love the sturdiness of each book and the styling.  Jane Erye has the motifs of the Charlotte Brontë classic.  Alice in Wonderland has the whimsicality of the Carroll Lewis classic.

The little board books are just the cutest books I think I have ever seen.  When I received an email asking if I would like to review a couple of books on the classics for young children, I was intrigued.  “How in the world are they going to do that?”  I thought.  Once I saw them, held them in my hands, and turned the pages I was amazed.  The simplicity of these books is its genius.  Teach your child how to count or learn colors while at the same time infusing curiosity for Jane Eyre or Alice in Wonderland, and not just in the child.

Looking through these two books had me wondering when I had last read these two classics.  The Baby Lit Books are classical looking and will have any shelf they are on stand out from their beauty.  They are simply gorgeous.  But mostly, the Baby Kit Books will help young children learn how to count and understand colors, while awakening a subconscious curiosity for the classics.  If mom and dad react as I did, they will want to pull out their well-worn copy of Jane Eyre and Alice in Wonderland and start reading to their child.  What a great bedtime idea.
