Synopsis

At the masquerade party you never know who you’re going to find. Who’s behind that pirate’s mask? Who’s under the knight helmet? In this playful lift-the-flap board book, children will love discovering the animals underneath, and the alliterative text will give them lots of fun new words to learn. Here is another wonderfully surprising board book from a master of the form, Giuliano Ferri. (from publisher)

Opening Sentences

“Is that Little Red Riding Hood? . . . Ohno, it’s the wicked wolf!”

Why I like Masquerade Party

Here comes Little Red Riding Hood, a Firefighter, a Pirate fresh from the sea, a Cowboy, a Sorcerer walking with a Wizard, a very Handsome Hero, a Knight, and one who thinks he’s the star: Wily Wolf. They all alliterate their way into a Masquerade Party just for you. The big question of the day is simple. Who is underneath each of those masks?

Wily Wolf starts this masquerade party dressed as Little Red Riding Hood. If he’s looking for someone, he’ll need to wait until the very last guest. Little Red Riding Hood ends this masquerade dressed as the wicked wolf. Kids won’t miss this connection and it may get them thinking. The thought that went into creating this board book can be seen in the reversal of roles from first flip to last.

Masquerade Party is a beautifully constructed board book with flaps that flip up. Each flap easily opens up to reveal the animal who wears the mask. The illustrations are what photographers call head shots. Children will get a clear view of the masks, with a partial wear of the matching costume. Created for children age two to four, each flap is easy to open and flip.

Pages are constructed of thick cardboard to keep little hands from accidentally tearing it, but the flap is noticeably thinner, yet thicker than a page in a picture book. The pages and flaps are laminated giving them a glossy look and feel; flaps become bendable and more difficult to tear. Because of this laminating process, pages and flaps can withstand light cleaning (for example:  sticky jelly, gritty sand, and baby drool) and keeps everything glossy.

The illustrations in Masquerade Party are charming and brightly colored. Costumes include accessories a two-year-old may be learning, while a four-year-old probably knows. Such accessories include a fireman’s helmet (or hat), a firehose, a basket, a black eye patch, a sword (or knife), a cowboy hat (with a band that looks just like a belt and buckle), and a lasso (or rope).

Young children will enjoy reading Masquerade Party with mom or dad, or by themselves. Lifting the flaps is great for working wrist muscles and eye-hand coordination. Most importantly, kids of all ages, especially the board book crowd, love manipulating their books with flaps, and other inventive devices such as, pulling, pushing, and turning over. Masquerade Party can keep your child happily active for quite a while.
