Steam Train, Dream Train 1-2-3 In Steam Train, Dream Train 1-2-3, young children can learn their numbers from 1 to 10 while enjoying the antics of the passenger animals, all getting ready for sleep in their own unique ways. Beginning with 1 “happy bear” controlling the purple engine“ALL ABOARD!”—the cars roll on to a 10 windowed red caboose carrying monkeys—one with a lantern, the other flying a kite.

Steam Train Dream Train 1-2-3_FC_Int 1Young children will love the reading giraffes, neatly tucked into bed aboard a flatbed car and the hopping, bouncing rabbits jumping jubilantly aboard a second flatbed. This train has more than flatbeds. How about an autorack? It carries 4 racecars and turtles dreaming of a win against that pesky hare. For construction lovers a well car holds a working crane and 7 prairie dogs working on the blueprints. As the steam train rolls, counting from 1 to 10, each has a fun, easy to read four-line rhyme.

Steam Train Dream Train 1-2-3_FC_Int 2Steam Train, Dream Train Colors The happy brown bear returns as conductor of the purple engine in Steam Train, Dream Train Colors. With a blow of the train’s whistle, the colorful train takes off, ready to teach young readers all about their colors. Oddly, the colors are not primary or secondary colors, but a combination of common and unusual colors (for beginners). A gray tender car, with a gray elephant catching some blue zzz’s, rides atop gray coal while an orange lion, reading by the light of a full, white moon, enjoys its ride in a sand-filled well car, complete with orange umbrella.

Steam Train Dream Train Colors_Int 2Young children will enjoy the animal antics aboard the variously colored train cars. Aboard a blue tanker car, a meerkat paints the sky blue while rolling just after a pink hippo, riding a pink boxcar, and blowing blue bubbles for its youngster. Kids can learn the colors not only from the train cars, but also from the variously added details, such as the brown dinosaur aboard the brown flatbed. It waves to an orange bird flying in a yellow hot air balloon.

Steam Train Dream Train Colors_Int 3Young children, who love the original Stream Train, Dream Train, (a picture book), from the amazing team of Duskey and Lichtenheld, will love these board books created just for the youngest of the train enthusiasts. The illustrations, gorgeously rendered in oil pastels, send the train traveling a nighttime route sure to not only help kids learn their first 10 numbers and colors, but also set the mood for bedtime. What better way to learn your numbers and colors than by reciting them just before sleep, where the learning will continue in the subconscious. With rhyming text that rolls off your tongue, Steam Train, Dream Train 1-2-3 and Stream Train, Dream Train Colors are sure to become instant classics.

  1. Steam Train Dream Train is a longtime favorite at our house and Tom Lichtenheld one of our very favorite authors (Shark VS Train, E-mergency, and of course Good Night Goodnight Construction Site). Do you follow him on social media at all? He’s a hoot!

  2. My train-obsessed son would have loved this book when he was younger. Love that it teaches about colors and numbers as well. The giraffes are super-sweet. Great review, Sue!
