“It’s Sunday evening and dinner is over. Beth is excited and heads to the sofa.” every Sunday Beth spends time with her daddy, giggling and enjoying his special attention, while he does her hair for her. With twists and curls, a few ribbons and bows and Beth has a special one-of-a-kind hair style. The next day, at school, Beth’s friends admire her hairstyle. This is the gist of Beth’s Twists. It is not a story in the traditional sense, but rather a moment in time caught to show the special bond between a girl and her father.
The story is nicely told in couplets. Though a couple of the rhymes are forced and one or two rhymes are slanted, the story is an easy read most parents will not mind reading many times. Young girls, especially African-American girls, will love this sweet moment. It is nice to see a story with non-white characters. Unfortunately, there are not enough of these stories, making even the moments in time treasurable.

The illustrations are brightly colored with much detail. From the art tagged to the walls it is easy to see this home is devoted to Beth. Writers are trying harder to show a diverse characters. Beth’s Twists helps in that regard. Young African-American girls can see themselves reflected in the story, not only in Beth, but in her friends at school, which include an Asian girl and a white boy. It is nice to see the characters in a children’s book reflect those children seen in the classroom.
Daddy Do My Hair is planned as a series, with each main character a different race, making this one of the few diverse series aimed at young children. Next up is titled, Daddy Do My Hair?: Hope’s Braids. In addition to celebrating the father-daughter relationship, Hope’s Braids will take on the subject of school bullying.
